Biography:
NIKKI TEMKIN is an accredited Functional Medicine Health Coach. She obtained her qualification through the FMCA (Functional Medicine Coaching Academy). Nikki’s focus is on helping those suffering from anxiety, burnout, exhaustion and hormonal issues to be empowered to feel vibrant, joyful and balanced.
After studying towards an Honours degree in English Literature and Drama & and Film Theory at Wits University, Nikki completed her MA in Scriptwriting and Film/ TV production at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK in 1997. Following her return to SA, Nikki worked in television as a scriptwriter, producer and director as well as copywriter in an advertising agency.
Since 2001, Nikki has worked prolifically as a journalist and written and edited for many magazines, newspapers, TV, public relations and digital platforms. Her longest gig was for The Sunday Times Magazine as TV editor and columnist. Nikki has also authored three books on Johannesburg beginning with Chic Jozi: the Joburg Pocketbook published in 2004. Recently she was the editor of The Media Magazine.
Nikki’s struggles with her own health led to an interest in healing naturally from within with an emphasis on wellbeing of body and mind. At a young age, she also delved into the world of meditation, mindfulness and metaphysics and learning about alternative medicine and studying Reiki.
Diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), Nikki has suffered with hormonal imbalance symptoms like migraines and intense pain. The deadline-driven, pressurised life of journalism also took its toll. By the age of 30, Nikki had been diagnosed with IBS, biochemical burnout, hypothyroidism as well as anemia and insulin resistance. Her immune system was weak and she suffered from chronic infections, mononucleosis (recurring Epstein Barr Virus) and chronic fatigue. Later, the thyroid autoimmune illness, Hashimotos, was also diagnosed. Both Nikki’s children were conceived with the help of fertility treatment in combination with complementary treatments such as reflexology, acupuncture and energy work.
Nikki’s own learnings led her to the functional approach which has helped tremendously in the treatment and management of her chronic conditions as well as in becoming more resilient in managing stress, anxiety and self-care.
Wellness Coaching is a natural evolution for Nikki who is knowledgeable about natural supplementation for health conditions and passionate about unlocking any emotional blockages to promote healing. Nikki is also a qualified genetic counsellor having completed the DNAlysis course. Naturally empathetic and bringing a wealth of self- knowledge and intuition to the craft of coaching, she’s dedicated to being of service and a catalyst to others in their journey towards optimal health, sustainable lifestyle changes and lasting personal transformation.
